Traveling with parents should not be a burden but an opportunity to have a wonderful time together. Note the suggestions enumerated below and you should have no trouble with your vacation trip.
Limit your schedule of activities.
Don’t forget that the aged needs their rest every now and then so avoid heavy and prolonged activities. Consider the physical limitation of your parents when making plans for your itinerary so you can provide for the mandatory rest time at regular intervals.
A good night sleep should reinvigorate everybody for the next day.
Your normal sleep requirement is the same regardless of where you are, from 6 to 8 hours every day. Try to avoid having any more activities after 11 p.m. Soaking your parent’s feet in warm water before sleep after a day of walking should help them to have a good rest and be ready for the next day’s schedule.
Have ample supply of their medication.
If your parents are suffering from diabetes, asthma, hypertension, high cholesterol or any other illness, make sure you obtain ample supply of medication from their doctors to last for the whole trip. To ensure that you remember to bring the medication, create a checklist of things to bring and put their medication among the top five items on that list. As a safety precaution, ask them to carry a medical record of their illness and contact details in case you are not around when they need medical attention.
Healthy diet
Instead of a few heavy meals, older people eat less but more often, and they need less salt, fat and sugar and you must prepare for that if you are traveling with your parents. You can prepare at home sandwiches and cookies to bring in case you cannot find a place to eat before reaching your destination. Along with food, bring plenty of bottled water sufficient for everybody during the whole trip.
Bring along a first aid travel pack.
Your first aid travel pack should contain medication for fever and diarrhea, cold symptoms and giddiness. It should also include a thermometer, tweezers, sharp scissors, safety pins, adhesive bandages, sterile gauze, adhesive tape and antiseptic wipes. You first aid kit should include the bare minimum to treat the usual medical emergencies, although it would be better if you can bring more medical supplies. Do check the expiry date for those medications that you bring along to ensure that they are safe for consumption.
You cannot afford to be negligent and leave things to chance if you want to enjoy that long planned vacation with your family. So long as you plan and prepare for all eventualities, you and you parents should have a grand time.
